It’s a month before the holidays and you’re grappling with a serious toy buyer’s dilemma: 0n the one hand, you kind of just want to get your kid a Barbie; on the other hand you’d rather not perpetuate the peddling of anatomical ideals that are so impossible to achieve — and impractical. ([Were Barbie human](http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2308658/How-Barbies-body-size-look-real-life-Walking-fours-missing-half-liver-inches-intestine.html), she’d have to walk on all fours because of her tiny feet and because she would only have room for half a liver.)

That’s why graphic designer turned toymaker Nickolay Lamm created the Lammily doll — what the Barbie would look like if she actually had the measurements of an average 19-year-old woman’s body (based on CDC data). And brown hair. (She also comes with a sticker-extension pack, complete with cellulite, freckles and acne, but we’ll get to that later.)

What started as an [art project in July 2013](http://www.businessinsider.com/barbie-doll-with-real-womans-measurements-2013-7?op=1) became [available for purchase and delivery Wednesday](https://www.lammily.com/). “Parents and their kids were emailing and asking where they could buy the ‘normal Barbie’ — but they didn’t exist,” Lamm, 26, tells TIME. And so he decided to [crowdfund his creation](http://time.com/12786/the-new-barbie-meet-the-doll-with-an-average-womans-proportions/), raising $501,000 for his $95,000 target goal. “To be honest, I knew it was either going to bomb or blow up, there was no in between,” Lamm says.

Lamm also created a video that transforms a Lammily doll into a Barbie to really get his point across:

“I wanted to show that reality is cool,” Lamm says. “And a lot of toys make kids go into fantasy, but why don’t they show real life is cool? It’s not perfect, but it’s really all we have. And that’s awesome.”

But real proportions and movement weren’t enough. Before putting the $24.99 dolls on sale — 19,000 dolls are going to backers, but 25,000 more are ready to be shipped before the holidays — Lamm decided to take things a step further.

Enter the $5.99 sticker-extension pack, available in January. Lamm says it took four months to find the proper sticker material, that gives the doll’s face acne, freckles, moles and the ability to blush:

Lammily

Lamm also decided to include scrapes and bruises. “Some people were like ‘Oh my God,’ as if I’m promoting domestic violence or something,” says Lamm, before assuring TIME that that was far from his intention. “Look, we all get boo boos and scratches. Life isn’t perfect, we all sometimes fall down but we get back up.”

Lamm’s aunt recommended he add scars, he says, “because, you know, some kids have scars and are really shy about them.”

Lammily

But then there’s the cellulite and the stretch marks:

![](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt9fefc22f2660f576/6987697355a8597b0fa842cc/screen-shot-2014-11-19-at-2-00-12-am.png?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Lammily

Unleashing a doll with stretch marks on the Internet is basically asking for trouble. But Lamm insists that it came from a sincere place, and that some people will welcome the option. “Demi Lovato even tweeted about it,” he says:

> [](https://twitter.com/ddlovato/status/344219154531876864)

“You know, people were saying this whole project was a joke from the beginning, so I have no doubt some people will take it as a joke,” Lamm says. “But I hope there are enough people who believe what I believe. I think 25% to 30% will think the stickers are stupid and the rest will think it’s good.”

The Lammily will have other fashion options in January:

![](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt3f10f9cbe8ebc0ce/6987697655a85945e2a842d9/screen-shot-2014-11-19-at-3-52-05-am.png?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp)

Lammily

“This is the doll people have been waiting for,” Lamm says. Stretch marks and all.

[ MUSIC ] How would children respond to a realistically proportioned fashion doll. To find out, I went to St. Edmund's Academy, an independent school in Pittsburgh. There Assistant Head of School, Susan Miller, asked children a series of questions. To see what they think of Lammily in comparison to other dolls. She's so pretty. I like her. I like her. I like her. I like her a lot. Hmm. I like her. So cool, it's cool. She looks like my sister. She looks like my sister. From the side she really looks like her. She kinda looks like my aunt Katie. She's not like other dolls. She, like, isn't, like, very thin.

I think she's really pretty. The hair looks like real hair. It feels as soft as mine. Feels soft. The hair feels so soft. Her hair is softer than I thought. Her hair is definitely like hair. She's not like other dolls [ MUSIC ] That I play with. She's really unique cause I don't have other dolls like this. It looks real. It looks more like a real live person. She's like a real person. She looks more like a person. Her belly button looks realistic. She looks like she's just a regular girl going to school. Any activities you think she would do? About every activity I do. I still in gymnastics and dance.

I make her run. I make her do gymnastics, too. Like a gymnastics pose. Gymnastics. You can like, pretend she's running. And she could ride some of my toy horses, but this one can't really go her so legs apart. What would you say the career would be of the Lamalee doll? Swimmer. A swimmer. Being a teacher. T shirt. T shirt. Surfing. Like a computer job. A pilot. What do you think the other doll would be? A surfer. A fashion star. LIke a model. A makeup artist. A swimming teacher. A cook. Looks like she would do any job. Which one do you think most seems like you? This one. This one. This one. This one.

This, this one. Cuz if she was real she would be able to. Stand more. What do the other one's feet look like? Like she has heel, invisible heels on. These don't really have like the kinda heel things. This have their toes stuck together, and they have like. The high heeled form of the tippy toe, these ones can like, they have separate toes. The toes like, they're not like a bunch of bumps. Cuz me, arms. Are not that like, skinny, all the way. Are they the same? Oh, what is different? She is wider than this one. She is a little bit wider. She is wider. More humanlike and wider. It's a little bit.

Bladder. Her belly's so in. Like And this one is like nice and like the perfect size. It's not thin like that. She's not so skinny. This one's like all fashiony and then like, and I think, then she thinks they're bet, she. He's better than everyone else. [ LAUGH ] I used to have, like, as much makeup as she does. She doesn't have a lot of makeup like most of my dolls. But she's smiling. She has a smile on the, her face. And. [ MUSIC ] She looks like she would help somebody if they get hurt. If I were to say to you, you're gonna get one of these dolls as a present ., which one would you like to receive as a present?

I have many of these and I would like this one. This one, cuz I already have her. I already have this one. So, I would like get this one. You wouldn't like- Little Emily doll. [ MUSIC ] This one. [ MUSIC ] Little Emily doll. This one. Probably once the boy dolls get out, I'll probably play with them a lot. [ MUSIC ]
